Study Circles

Canadians are meeting in small groups, or "study circles," joining thousands of others in more than 180 countries, applying spiritual principles to their lives and communities. This remarkable programme in adult and youth education is perhaps the most widespread single educational programme in the world.

Anyone is welcome to join one of the study circles that are organized in hundreds of local communities throughout Canada. Using cooperative and active participation methods, these study circles aim at self- and community transformation. Bahá'í's get together in small groups, inviting anyone that wants to join them, and use discussions and practical exercises to systematically study those spiritual and moral principles that can be directly applied to improving and transforming their lives and expanding their commitment to and desire for personal and collective change.

Based on Bahá'í principles and universal moral values, study circles aim to improve our lives and make the world a better place.

Excerpts from 'Reflections on the Life of the Spirit'
a workbook published by the Ruhi Institute.

Around the world, one of the most common formats for Bahá'í study circles feature a workbook entitled "Reflection on the Life of the Spirit." Developed by the Ruhi Institute in Colombia, the workbook is part of a series of materials that are widely used around the world by Bahá'í communities in an effort to foster constructive personal and community transformation.

Our True Wealth

The light that reflects in a mirror is its wealth. Without the light, the mirror is worth little. Our spiritual qualities, our knowledge, our service to humanity constitute our true wealth. Material possessions are necessary and acceptable, but only if they are used for the promotion of human virtue and happiness. Bahá'u'lláh says:

"Man's merit lieth in service and virtue and not in the pageantry of wealth and riches. Take heed that your words be purged from idle fancies and worldly desires and your deeds be cleansed from craftiness and suspicion. Dissipate not the wealth of your precious lives in the pursuit of evil and corrupt affection, nor let your endeavors be spent in promoting your personal interest."

Reflections on the Life of the Spirit

This is the first in a series of books we use in our study circles.
In this course you will gain a deeper understanding of the answers to:
  • What is the purpose of life?
  • What is the nature of the soul?
  • How does the soul progress?
  • Is there life after death?
  • What is the significance and effect of prayer?
  • What is the effect of our words and deeds?

"The Great Being saith: Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom."
(Bahá'u'lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá'u'lláh, p. 259)
